Ice is now measuring 8 plus inches. We’ve had numerous reports of shifting ice as it expands and pushes pressure cracks up and breaks ice around it. It’s likely we’ll soon be measuring a foot and heavier machines will be running around out there. This afternoon I was able to find favorable places to cross pressure cracks unlike the gaps last evening. Those gaps froze but thiner ice still surrounds the pressure crack. It’s no place to be messing around. Through out the days and nights ice is constantly changing by the minute. The biggest mistake an ice angler can make is to assume their typically traveled route is in the same condition it was and become complacent. Ice is always changing and you have to be observant constantly or…bam!!! Down it goes. Fishings been good. Jim Edmiston from Lockport, IL brought this 45 1/4” northern pike in. Weighing just a couple ounces shy of 25 pounds. Thanks for sharing Jim!
On a serious note, a fellow ice angler slipped on the ice today needing assistance off the Bay to be escorted to the hospital. Many of us have gone down and found out how hard ice is. Good cleats are an absolute must to reduce the chance of slippage. Your hips, back and head will thank you.
Increasing your odds,
